Cheri Smith
Hatch (Self Portrait)
Oil on Board, 180 x 115 mm, 2020.
This painting is a self portrait, and a kind of still life. It was painted from observation while sat at the desk at the end of my bed which became my temporary studio during lockdown this year. It is one of a series of self portraits I made during this time for prolonged reflection.
On my desk are: a childhood toy of a tadpole, a ‘touch me not’ plant from Jamaica, a fragment from a drawing in progress and a honeywort plant.
For me this painting signifies both a deep introspection and a languid basking in the details of external things.
