Kavitha Balasingham.
Kavitha Balasingham (b.1994, Kent) is a London-based artist and has exhibited internationally and received multiple recognitions, including the Goldsmiths Junior Fellowship and Arts Council England funding for 'Ghost Show' (2022) and 'Navigating Diaspora Identity Research Project' (2024).
Kavitha’s practice uses whimsical elements like cartoon physics and portals to transport you into a world that's both strange and captivating. Her work blends nostalgia and technology, humour, grotesque elements, sensuality, and playfulness. The materials transform into ambiguous forms, adding absurdity and open interpretation, making her work provisional and unclassifiable.
Inspired by Pleasure Activist Adrienne Maree Brown, Kavitha reconnects with the earth to rediscover belonging. Brown's philosophy emphasises that home is defined by safety and love, not just land. This theme enriches Kavitha’s work, celebrating desire and pleasures transformative power, and exploring human experiences
Kavitha explores the evolution of text message language as a means of revealing truth. She notes how its economical origins have become a nuanced form of communication. For instance, "lol" now conveys a wide range of emotions beyond "laugh out loud," such as empathy, sadness, forgiveness, happiness, horniness… lol.
