Occasionally / I’ve summoned / objects is an exhibition by the penultimate group of Wimbledon BA Sculpture students. Sculpture, as of 2021, will no longer be taught at Wimbledon. At a poignant moment to reflect on the history of the course, the group has dug into the college archives to respond to the little-known in-house course magazine, it’s

From the earliest published issue of 1964, overseen by the artist Franciszka Themerson, to the seventh and final issue of 1972, it’s is a map of artistic preoccupations of the time and, here, as Occasionally / I’ve summoned / objects, it’s a guide to the present and future.

Full of experimental contributions from celebrated artists, students and teachers alike, exploring a range of topics, from concrete poetry to cybernetics, it’s provided a public-facing platform for the most exciting activity of the contemporary and historical art school avant garde. It was in the third issue of the magazine that the visionary poet Antonin Artaud’s poem ‘The Human Face’, from which the title of this exhibition is taken, was reproduced:

Occasionally
I’ve summoned
objects
trees or animals
to come near the human heads
because I’m still not sure of the limits
by which the body of my human self
may be stopped

Seeking to move beyond habitual limits of sculptural practice, of the honing of a distinct undergraduate style, the exhibiting artists will not produce individuated works, responding instead to the cues of specific details of the magazines produced over seven years.

Presented on specially-designed display sets, the works will be at the dramaturgical will of the group, who will also curate Occasionally / I’ve summoned / objects. Alongside sculptural works, the group will present a publication featuring visual and written works by the artists and collaborators.

Occasionally / I’ve summoned / objects has been developed in collaboration with the writer Jonathan P. Watts.
